My deepest gratitude goes to the Officers and men of the Sixth Ranger Battalion, Alamo Scouts, and Filipino guerillas who stormed the prison camp at Cabanatuan and saved us from being slaughtered.

PRELUDE

Moving down the Bataan Peninsula we find how cruel the Japanese can be. Our medics are targets, our hospitals bombed, my buddies killed for no reason.

We have stopped their advance to capture Manila for four months. Now they are getting even. The guards kill the marchers, disembowel them, and through them in the ditch with their comrades and the coolies. We dare not leave the road or we will be executed.

We quickly learn the word "speedo".

They force us to stand beside an artesian spring and do not let us drink the cool clear water as it bubbles from the ground. They   decapitate the prisoners for any violation of their rules. They kill the natives for giving us food or drink.

The heads of my dead comrades are tied on long bamboo poles and paraded in front of the survivors.

And so the "Bataan Death March" windes its way North.
